Our Mission Statement
At PS 178 we believe that all students should be given the foundational skills and technological tools necessary to prepare them for success in the 21st century. By providing a rigorous academic curriculum, students will leave our school as problem solvers, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens. PS 178 prides itself on having a caring environment that nurtures student confidence and emotional well being. We foster mutual respect and social responsibility by placing an emphasis on strong partnerships between home, school, and the community. We believe in supporting diverse learners and presenting students with equal opportunities to achieve their optimal academic performance. We understand that in order for every child to be successful, they must be fully supported both inside and outside of our school.
Academics + Social Emotional Learning
A student's first experience in school should begin within a cozy, caring, and nurturing environment such as the one we provide here. At P.S. 178, schooling begins in Kindergarten, allowing experienced and highly educated teachers to begin implementing core values, social development, and academic rigor right from the beginning of a child's educational career. PS 178 is a place where children grow both academically and socially.
Diversity and Engagement
Students at PS 178 come from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. We are proud to be members of a diverse population of students. Parents and our local community are an integral part of what creates our school community. We consistently provide opportunities for both parents and the community to be involved in our school.
Innovation and Technology
Technology plays a large role in students' education at PS 178. Each classroom is equipped with a SMART Board for interactive learning, computers where students are encouraged to read, play math games, explore learning websites, and play phonics and word building games; and SMART Document Cameras. The document cameras allow teachers to show the entire class a document (such as a book, a piece of student writing, or an object) in real-time while revising and editing so the whole class can see. Many teachers are also beginning to incorporate the use of iPads in their teaching and during small group instruction.
